Breaking Barriers: Musakanya Lupupa’ s Journey to Empower Others Through Sign Language
In the heart of Kitwe, where bustling city life meets resilient communities, lives Musakanya Lupupa, a 37-year-old whose life story is one of triumph over adversity. Born with a congenital anomaly that caused hearing loss and compounded by meningitis at just six weeks old, Musakanya faced a world of silence from an early age. But silence did not define him; instead, it fuelled his determination to rise above his circumstances.
Musakanya’s journey is a testament to the power of education, family support, and personal resilience. Despite his hearing loss, he excelled academically, earning certificates in construction, crafts, and engineering. Recognizing his potential, his family sent him to South Africa, where he mastered sign language—a skill that would later become a beacon of hope for many.
Today, Musakanya works with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, but his impact extends far beyond his day job. During his spare time, he volunteers with the Zambia Hearing Disability Improvement Project (ZAHDIP), teaching sign language to staff members and others at Nkana East Clinic. His efforts are laying the groundwork for an ambitious 2025 ZAHDIP initiative to teach sign language to clients who cannot benefit from hearing aids.
“Sign language is more than a tool for communication; it’s a bridge to inclusion and empowerment,” Musakanya says. His dedication to ZAHDIP stems from his own experiences of overcoming barriers and his desire to create a more inclusive community.
For the ZAHDIP staff, Musakanya’s lessons are transformative. Harrison Kazembe, ZAHDIP’s Operations Manager, highlights his impact: “Musakanya’s teaching not only equips our staff with practical skills but also inspires us to embrace the diversity within our community. He’s helping us break down communication barriers, one sign at a time.”
Musakanya’s work has also begun to inspire the broader Kitwe community. His story resonates as an example of what is possible when determination meets opportunity. By sharing his knowledge and experiences, he encourages others with hearing loss to embrace their potential and teaches society to view disability not as a limitation but as a unique strength.
As ZAHDIP prepares for its 2025 program to teach sign language to clients, Musakanya’s role becomes even more crucial. Through his guidance, ZAHDIP aims to ensure that no client feels left out or unable to connect. This initiative is not just about teaching a new skill—it’s about fostering a culture of inclusion, understanding, and mutual respect.
