TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY; MIKE MWENYA’S INSPIRING JOURNEY
Mike Mwenya [name withheld]was born on 31st ,march, 2004, in Mansa district, he began his life as a healthy baby boy. However, at the age of 1 year, he suffered from severe malaria, which led to hearing loss. His parents enrolled him in school, where he excelled brilliantly well in all his general education courses consistently achieving A+ grades, despite his inability to hear clearly. Regardless of his hearing challenge, Mike’s determination never wavered Overcoming the difficulties associated with hearing loss. Mr Mwenya completed his secondary education with excellent grades and was accepted at the Copperbelt university (CBU) to pursue further studies.
During his time at the University ,Mike sought medical assistance from various hospitals ,hoping to find a solution to his hearing impairment because he was at the verge of almost being deferred to his previous semester with the risk of dropping out of University due to the fact that his hearing was now failing him, to the extent were he could not hear a thing during his lectures. Unfortunately, the visits to the various audiology facilities yielded no success. However his perseverance paid off when he was directed to Zambia hearing disability improvement project(ZAHDIP) where his hope was then rekindled.
On April 5 2024,Mike was fitted with hearing aids ,marking a significant turning point in his life, with the aid of these devices he was able to hear clear sound for the first time hence the University gave him a chance to continue his semester. He was never deferred because of his disability. This remarkable improvement has greatly enhanced his quality of life and academic experience. Currently, Mike continues his studies at the university, fully embracing the new found ability to hear and actively participate in his education. Mike Mwenya‘s story is a testament to power of resilience and the impact of modern medical advancements. His Journey from severe hearing loss to regaining his hearing, serves as an inspiration to many and illustrating that with determination and support, overcoming adversity is possible.
